done with fundamentals

Finished up the CFJC fundamentals class this week, with classes Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

On Tuesday we went over a lot of the movements we'd already learned, and then we learned proper form for kettlebell swings. The workout at the end of class was:
10 minutes as many rounds as possible of:
5  one-handed kb swing (each side)
10 push ups
15 jumping squats

I got through 7 full rounds, then the kb swings and 4 push ups... tough one!

This morning we were tested on everything we had learned over the 6 classes - then we did a partner workout. Sounds simple enough: Row 4000M. Switch with your partner every 500M, so each person ends up doing 4 sets of 500M. This was a leg burner!

My partner and I pushed it and got 17:33 total time. Felt good after!

Can't wait to go to some regular classes now!

fundamentals class #4

Today was class #4 of fundamentals at CrossFit Jersey City and I'm loving it so far. Today we learned proper technique for hang cleans and push jerks. Then we split into two groups, one group did wall balls and the other learned handstand pushups (or scaled versions of them...)

Workout at the end was:

3 rounds of:
15 Deadlifts
12 Hang Cleans
9 Push Press
(65#)

We did it with a partner, each of us rotating with the exercises, so it theory we did 6 rounds total. We finished at 10:04.

fundamentals class #2

Today was the second class of fundamentals at CFJC! We loosened up (good thing, I was sore!) then learned about the shoulder press, push press and thrusters. After that, we broke up into groups and learned dips and pull ups and rowing.

Figured out I need to use the GREEN band when I do dips and pull ups to scale to my weak bod, and also learned some new stuff about rowing that I hadn't known before.

Ended with this workout:

Had my first Fundamentals class at Crossfit JC this AM...  great start to the day! We talked a little about what Crossfit is, then started getting into movements - today we focused on squats: air squats, back squats, overhead squats, front squats... Also did push ups and burpees.

Did a few little workouts:

2 rounds of: 3 burpees, 5 push ups, 7 air squats...

Then the real work out for the day:

Spartan Sprint!

Today we drove up to Tuxedo, NY and did the Spartan Sprint! 3.5 hilly miles with a bunch of fun obstacles. It was tough but we had a good time (and got very muddy)...

Felt good & like those work outs have been paying off, cleared every obstacle except 3 (can't rope climb, missed the target on the javelin throw, and fell off while I was traversing a wall). That meant a total of 90 burpees in penalties!

Overall, a good time.

But I couldn’t just leave it. I was only going to be home for two days; it was the least I could do to help out. I reached up to unscrew the light bulb. The next thing I knew I was holding the entire fixture in my hand. The only thing keeping it attached to the ceiling was a thin blue wire.

“Uh oh,” I said, used to talking to myself as I accomplished household tasks, both an inherited trait and also a subliminal coping mechanism for living alone. But I wasn’t alone this time.

“What did you do?” My father had apparently heard the reaction meant only for my ears. I quickly tried to call down that everything was fine, but it was too late. I could hear his heavy steps already making their way up the stairs.

And for some reason, I started to laugh. Here I was, holding an entire light fixture above my head, with my soon to be frustrated father on his way to the scene, and I couldn’t stop giggling.

He arrived at the top of the stairs, squinting through his bifocals at the mini disaster. He took the light out of my hands. “I told you to leave it!” he grumbled. “I was trying to help!” I honestly felt that his attitude was a little extreme; after all, maybe the fixture he installed shouldn’t have been so easily removed from the ceiling. All I did was twist it…

“Just go downstairs.”

And just like that, I was banished from helping fix my mess. Deemed useless. I fled to the living room, where my brother and mom sat on the couch, watching my shameful retreat. They did not try to stifle their smiles.

“What did you do?” Mom was inquisitive.

“I accidentally pulled out the light fixture.”

This seemed to be hilarious to my brother, who burst into laughter. I slid onto the couch, curling up next to my mom, transforming into her baby girl. I was safe here.

She sighed and ran her hand through my hair.

“What are we going to do with you?”

Honestly, I didn’t know myself.

This was a benchmark I guess, first time I just went out and ran 1 mile trying to go fast. I didn't warm up at all, so hopefully a good warm up will help me next time as I try to cut 1 minute off today's time...yikes!

GOALS

Okay I didn't do a December challenge - what a jerk I am! I was planning on writing a spec script, and then on my week off I just got really lazy and laid around watching movies and tv shows and took my dog on walks and had family dinners and didn't write a script.

So I think I need to write goals down so I am held responsible to complete them by all my loyal readers ! (hi mom)

And it seems like everyone is doing the whole New Year's Resolution thing right now, so I may as well hop on board.

So here goes, my two goals (gotta start slow):

1. Write the first draft of a spec script by FEBRUARY 6TH. That gives me a little over 4 weeks. Hopefully I get myself to start it before the last minute.

2. Lose 10 pounds. I feel like I put on a bit of weight. I'd like to lose it! Last night I came home from work, ate an entire package of Trader Joe's ravioli, AND ice cream. AND watched 4 and a half straight hours of television (it was the last four episodes of Homeland, can you blame me?). Anyways, gonna have to cut that stuff out. I guess I'll give myself the same cut off date for this goal as well: FEBRUARY 6TH.
